Windows Server 2022 Standard is Microsoft's server edition for physical servers and lightly virtualized environments. It provides the core roles an organization needs: Active Directory, file and print services, DNS and DHCP, the IIS web server, Hyper-V and Remote Desktop Services.

The license covers 16 cores, the minimum required per server, and allows the operating system to run on the physical server plus 2 virtual machines. Every user or device that accesses the server needs a Windows Server Client Access License (CAL), sold separately.

Key features

• 16 cores and 2 virtual machines - Windows Server is licensed per physical core, with a minimum of 8 cores per processor and 16 cores per server. Standard edition allows 2 virtual machines or Hyper-V isolated containers plus one Hyper-V host per license, and unlimited Windows containers.
• Secured-core server - On certified hardware, Windows Server 2022 uses TPM 2.0, UEFI Secure Boot, firmware protection with DRTM and virtualization-based security (VBS and HVCI) to protect the server against advanced attacks.
• Encrypted connections - HTTPS and TLS 1.3 are enabled by default, the DNS client supports DNS over HTTPS, and SMB supports AES-256 encryption and SMB compression for faster file transfers over slow networks.
• Core infrastructure services - Active Directory Domain Services, DNS, DHCP, a file server with DFS and Data Deduplication, Failover Clustering, Windows Server Backup and Storage Replica, which in Standard is limited to one partnership with a single volume of up to 2TB.
• Hybrid management - The server can be connected to Azure through Azure Arc and managed with Windows Admin Center. Hyper-V also adds nested virtualization support on AMD processors.
