Internal Hard Drive Western Digital Caviar Black WD5001AALS

The WD Caviar Black WD5001AALS is a 3.5-inch 500GB internal hard drive from the Caviar Black series, Western Digital's performance line for desktop PCs. It spins at 7200 RPM with a 32MB cache, 4.2 ms average latency and a SATA 3 Gb/s interface. The drive is used and has been tested in our lab.

According to WD the series targets power computing: video and photo editing, multimedia and gaming PCs, as well as consumer RAID-0 and RAID-1 arrays. The drive suits use as a second drive for file storage, as a backup drive, or as a replacement for a failed drive in an existing PC. For the operating system it is best combined with an SSD.

A dual-processor electronics architecture boosts performance, and NoTouch ramp load technology keeps the recording head from ever touching the disk surface, protecting the drive in transit as well.

Key features

• Dual processor - A controller with two processors, twice the processing power of a standard controller, to maximize performance with large files.
• 7200 RPM and 32MB cache - 7200 RPM rotation with a 4.2 ms average latency and a 32MB cache for fast data access.
• NoTouch ramp load - The recording head never touches the disk media, which means significantly less wear on the head and media and better drive protection in transit.
• Consumer RAID ready - WD tests and recommends Caviar Black drives for consumer RAID-0 and RAID-1 applications.
• Reliability - 300,000 load/unload cycles and a non-recoverable read error rate of less than 1 in 10^14 bits read.
• Tested compatibility - WD tests its drives on hundreds of systems and platforms in its FIT Lab for broad compatibility.
