Storage Server Asustor AS3204T

The Asustor AS3204T is a desktop network attached storage (NAS) server with four bays for 3.5-inch SATA hard drives. It runs on a quad-core Intel Celeron at 1.6 GHz (burst up to 2.24 GHz) with 2GB of DDR3L memory and Asustor's ADM operating system. This unit is used and has been tested in our lab.

It suits homes and small offices: central backup of the family computers, file sharing over the network, a photo and video library, recording from security cameras and a media server for the TV. With four 18TB drives it reaches up to 72TB of raw capacity, and RAID 5 or RAID 6 keeps the data safe even if one or two drives fail.

Asustor rates it at 112MB/s read and 110MB/s write in RAID 5, and the built-in AES-NI engine keeps encrypted folders fast. The HDMI 1.4b output connects it straight to a TV, and it draws only 27W in operation and 11.4W with the disks in hibernation.

Key features

• Quad-core CPU and Gigabit network - A quad-core Intel Celeron at 1.6 GHz, bursting to 2.24 GHz. According to Asustor it delivers 112MB/s read and 110MB/s write in RAID 5 over Gigabit Ethernet.
• AES-NI hardware encryption - The encryption engine built into the CPU protects data from the moment it is stored, even if the drives are lost or stolen. Asustor quotes over 111MB/s read and over 79MB/s write for encrypted data.
• Tool-free installation - Hand screws on the cover and drive rails and a sliding cover let you open the unit and install the drives in minutes without a screwdriver.

• Four bays and up to 72TB - Four SATA bays for 3.5-inch drives with up to 72TB raw capacity (4x 18TB). Choose Single, JBOD, RAID 0, 1, 5, 6 or 10 and expand later; with expansion units it supports up to 16 drive bays.
• Home multimedia center - HDMI 1.4b with Full HD (1080p) output connects directly to a TV or amplifier, and apps such as UPnP Media Server and OwnTone from App Central stream movies, music and photos to every device at home.
• Backup and ADM - ADM includes backup for Windows and Mac computers (including Time Machine), Rsync, external and cloud backup, user and permission management, and supports SMB, AFP, NFS, FTP, WebDAV and iSCSI.

• Low power consumption - 27W in operation, 11.4W with disks in hibernation and 0.79W in sleep mode, with a quiet 120 mm fan (19.7dB at HDD idle) and a 90W external adapter.
