Internal Hard Drive Western Digital Ultrastar DC HC550 WUH721816ALE6L4 3.5" 16TB

Western Digital Ultrastar DC HC550 16TB Internal Hard Drive

The Western Digital Ultrastar DC HC550 WUH721816ALE6L4 is a 16TB 3.5-inch enterprise hard drive with a SATA 6Gb/s interface, a 7200RPM spindle speed and a 512MB data buffer. It is designed for cloud and hyperscale storage, massive scale-out data centers, object storage such as Ceph and OpenStack Swift, and Big Data analytics with Hadoop.

The drive is built on the sixth-generation helium-filled HelioSeal platform, uses conventional magnetic recording (CMR) and reaches a sustained transfer rate of up to 262MB/s. This is the SE version in 512e format without hardware encryption, with a rated workload of up to 550TB per year and a projected MTBF of 2.5 million hours.

Key features

• 16TB with CMR - Conventional magnetic recording works with all enterprise applications, and the capacity is enabled by Energy-Assisted Magnetic Recording (EAMR) technology.
• Sixth-generation HelioSeal - The helium-sealed design delivers high power efficiency: 5.6W at idle and 6.5W operating, about 0.35W per TB at idle.
• Precision in busy systems - A Triple Stage Actuator and TDMR improve head positioning accuracy, Rotational Vibration Safeguard keeps performance up in multi-drive systems, and Media Cache Plus improves random writes.
• Data center reliability - A projected MTBF of 2,500,000 hours, a 0.35% AFR, 600,000 load/unload cycles and 24x7 operation with a workload of up to 550TB per year.
• Firmware security and erase - RSA-signed firmware blocks unauthorized firmware downloads. The SE version has no hardware encryption and erases data by Sanitize Overwrite, and the ATA Security Feature Set is supported. Legacy pin 3 configuration without Power Disable.
